Reentering the Workforce

Many of us, once we reach a certain age, when our kids are old enough to reasonably get by on their own, we’re leaving an ending marriage, or we simply need a fresh start in a new industry – find ourselves looking for jobs and wondering “How do I go about this? What is it that I want?” It’s hard, getting back out there and hunting for jobs, especially if you’re not 100% sure about what you want to do.

Many people, especially women, who find themselves seeking a career in middle age, are flocking to the world of healthcare. This is true for several reasons. For starters, healthcare careers offer excellent job security, as well as good pay and excellent benefits. Working in the healthcare field is a satisfying, rewarding and social career that, while high-stress, is all about helping others. Many find that type of career is right up their alley. In addition, often healthcare positions (depending on what field you go into) offer flexible schedules and a lot of choice in what type of environment you’d like to work in, whether that’s a hospital, doctor’s office, school, or some other facility. It’s hard to get bored when you work in the field of healthcare, as technology is constantly changing, new positions open up every day and there will always be new patients to attend to.

In the healthcare industry, job seekers should begin their search online. Start with local hospital websites and government websites that have relevant job listings, the broaden your search with career websites, especially those that are specific to healthcare. There are lots of them out there, so beware of scam jobs that sound too good to be true, that ask for money upfront for “equipment” or tests, or that ask you for personal information that isn’t relevant. You’ll be able to sniff them out fairly easily. But in general, job listing sites are an excellent resource and you’ll find the best jobs there.

Many people are seeking careers these days in emergency medicine, as a need for more workers in this field are ever-growing. These positions are high-stakes, exciting and often stressful, but the rewards far outweigh the negatives. For a new emergency medicine position, Practice Match is a good resource for great jobs in a variety of areas, depending on your location and skill set. Another industry that sees tons of applicants every day is the area of nursing, which is a respected job that will never go out of style. We will always need nurses, and no matter what type of nursing degree you have, you’re guaranteed to find a great position in your area.

These are just two positions that have plentiful job openings these days, but there are so many more. Surgeons, lab techs, radiologists and anesthesiologists, insurance reps, pharmacists, administrators, tech innovators and many more positions in the healthcare field are hiring literally every day. The best part of these jobs isn’t the great pay, the job security, the benefits or the flexibility; the best part of working a job in healthcare is that you can go to work every day knowing that you’re making a difference in the lives of people who need you.
