Behind Closed Doors — A Must Read This Summer #BehindClosedDoors

I received the following book from SheSpeaks/St Martins Press to facilitate my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Ah summer time. Time when everything slows down and we try to relax a little more (try being the key word). It’s a perfect time to catch up on those books that have been on your reading list forever. I love sitting by the pool with my littles and reading. Well, attempting to read while grading jumps and seeing all their cool “tricks” they can’t wait to show me. It brings back childhood memories of reading all summer long while on school break.

Reading is one of my favorite things to do. It always has been. I love sharing my love of reading with my family and passing down a love of books to a new generation. Now that I’m a busy working mom it’s really a lot harder to find time to read. When I do I’m a huge suspense/mystery or horror fan. I love attempting to figure out the story before the ending. Behind Closed Doors was the #1 Bestseller in the UK for a very good reason.

Synopsis

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.

You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

My Thoughts

I’m going to start this off by saying I have never read or seen Gone Girl. Please don’t shoot me but I hadn’t gotten around to it. I also have a fierce rule against seeing books that are turned into movies because I’m always disappointed. So it’s on my “To Read” list and I’ll get to it eventually. The reason I’m telling you this is because this book is being compared to this year’s Gone Girl. To say this book is intense is to put it mildly. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat almost the whole time. It starts of a little slow and then….bam! I read it all in one sitting (it was a really late night for me) because I literally could not put it down once I started.

The story is very well written. You feel for Grace and her situation. Grace and Jack seam to be the perfect couple and lead the life that everyone wants to lead. It goes back and forth between the past and the present telling the story of this seemingly perfect couple and the dark lives they lead privately. I’m not going to give away too much of the story but I will say if you are sensitive to any form of abuse this may not be the best choice for you. Overall, Behind Closed Doors is extremely well written with complex characters and a great plot line. I can see this becoming just as popular in the US as it was in the UK.
