The Sea House Review

I was extremely excited when I got a chance to review “The Sea House” by Elizabeth Gifford. This work of fiction was well written with amazing character development and a story that pulled you in from the very beginning. It has a dual story line and a hint of fantasy.

Ruth, who at a very young age found her mothers body after an accidental drowning, and Michael have finally fixed up a broken down sea house. They find a bones of a baby with it’s legs fused together buried under the house. This correlates to the story of Reverend Ferguson (an amateur scientist in the 1860s) who is obsessed with finding out the truth behind the legend of the selkies- Scottish mermaids.

I really appreciated the emotional journey Ruth struggled with. Living in her mothers home village while dealing with depression and expecting her first child. I loved that the story ended well and didn’t leave the reader with unanswered questions. Elizabeth Gifford moved seamlessly from one characters story to the next. I really enjoyed the characters in this story and found it to be well written. I will be looking for future novels from Gifford.
