Owning a pet can be expensive. From food and toys to pet insurance and vet bills, you can pay thousands over your pet’s lifetime. If you think you’re spending too much on your pet, there are ways you can save. You can use different methods to cut down on your spending without affecting your pet’s quality of life. Many of the ways you save on your own expenses can be applied to your pet’s supplies too. Try out some of these tricks to spend less on your pet and make some awesome savings.

Do It Yourself

If there’s something you can do yourself, you can usually spend money on it. However, you have to be cautious, as sometimes you can end up spending more. There are few things you can try doing yourself to save money on your pet supplies. Firstly, you can make toys yourself. A lot of animals would rather play with any old bits and pieces anyway, so spending money on proper toys is sometimes a waste. You can make toys like tug toys for dogs or sparkly things for cats. In fact, a lot of cats are happy with a piece of scrunched up paper. Remember that your pets don’t need a lot of toys, either. Rotate a few of them to keep them interesting.

Buy in Bulk

Buying anything in bulk is likely to save you money. You might have to spend more in one go, but it means spending less altogether. Things you can buy in bulk include food and treats, bedding like sawdust or shredded paper, cat litter, and more. You can even buy medications in bulk, including worming treatments like Interceptor Plus and flea and tick treatments like Frontline Plus. Some of these need to be given every month, so it makes sense to buy a few months’ worth of treatments at a time.

Look for Durability

You could be spending more money if you choose the cheapest items and have to replace them more often. When it’s possible, it’s often best to invest in quality products that are going to last. So, whether you’re buying a rabbit hutch, a cat bed, or a collar and leash for your dog, choosing quality over cost is a good idea. A handsome leather collar should last longer than a fabric one that could start to unravel before long. However, you need to get the balance right. Don’t overspend on designer items, either. Your dog won’t know if he has a Gucci coat.

Buy Used Items

Plenty of other people have been smart and bought pet items that last. And if they’ve finished with them for whatever reason, they often will want to sell them on. If you can find used items that are in good condition, you can save on a number of things. You might be able to get a good crate for your dog or a cat tree for your kitty.

You can spend a lot of money on your pet, but you don’t have to. There are plenty of ways to make some savings.
