I am a huge soccer fan. My nephews both have played their entire life and even my little Lovebug wants to start soccer next year. It’s a very big sport for New England and people are very serious about it. We were given an opportunity to try out British Soccer Camp from Challenger Sports this summer and challenge our soccer skills. My Monster and Lovebug are still too young for camp so one of our best friends, Kristen and her son G, tried out the camp for us!

Their Thoughts

As most of you know, playing outdoor sports in New England can be a bit challenging. The first day of camp met us with an unfortunate amount of cold rain and nasty weather. Even in July you can never predict the weather. The coaches were very welcoming and stated that they would “play through the rain” (we are New Englanders after all). G already said that he enjoyed playing in the rain because it was more fun! He was eager to get to the field. After introductions, they were off to begin practicing their skills and play games. The weather ended up being more sever than expected, so out of safety for the children, the first day was cut short. G was really excited about his day. He told us all about the coaches and where they were from, what they did and their plans for the rest of the week.

The next couple of days went off without a hitch. The coaches quickly realized G’s abilities and moved him to another group accordingly (witch we really appreciated). The groups were small so the kids received lots of hands on attention. The coaches enthusiasm for the campers and cam was palpable. Every morning the kids were greeted by may as they got out of the cars and signed in for the day. On Wacky Wednesday we arrived laughing at the coaches participation!

The week culminated with a competition for the “World Cup”. Campers deisgned and made their own flags for their different teams. They even designed and made cakes for the two top teams and G said they were delicious! G was on the winning team and was grinning ear to ear when he accepted his “trophy”. His team was also able to pick a coach that they could dump an ice bucket on. So fun!

At the end of the day, each camper was called up to receive their certificate and do something silly on the way back down. It was great seeing the kids enjoying themselves so much. The coaches gave the kids their camp balls that they had signed. Their certificates each had words of encouragement and noted their strengths and weaknesses. We loved seeing the individualized touches throughout the week. We can truly say that we will miss these amazing coaches. As G was drifting off to sleep on the last night he whispered, “Can I go again next year?”
