Our Interview with Abigail Spencer of Timeless
What is it like working on a show dealing with time travel?
- Would it be bad if I said I love it from a fashion perspective? I love it. I will say it is cool because we are making a new movie every single week. As a little girl that played with paper dolls and Barbie’s it’s like I get to fulfill all of my little girl dreams by going to every single different era. It’s just been so fun to create all those looks and also to represent women from each of these time periods.
What period of time would you personally like to travel back to?
- I’m super into the 40’s right now. I love old Hollywood and old movies and the fashion from that era. I think that would be such a cool time to visit. From a movie standpoint Katharine Hepburn coming into her scene and some of the greatest movie musical the nerd in me grew up watching “Funny Girl” and “Philadelphia Story” and just seeing how that all came together.
What is the most challenging part of working on this show?
- Well, one of the most challenging parts is from a personal standpoint. I’m a mom of an eight year old boy and he is in school during the week and I shoot during the week. It’s really challenging being apart and coming together on the weekends. I’m so grateful for technology and his teachers. His teacher has this app and it’s totally changed my life. I can see photos of him from school, the ratings he’s getting in class and how he’s doing. She keeps it updated and he can see it too. It’s a great way to feel connected to his class while I’m off working. It’s hard. It’s hard being a working mom. It’s been one of the most challenging things. I mean it’s challenging. We’re shooting a brand new movie every week. We have new costumes and makeup and creating period correct and also creating entertaining cinema is also really challenging. But I think the hardest part is just being away from my little boy.
It sounds like you’re away from your son a lot for filming. Where is Timeless filmed?
- Ya I mean it’s difficult in general. I’m based out of Los Angeles and I have been working on a show for the last four years called Rectify and that was based out of Atlanta. Timeless is now being shot in Vancouver. Not much shoots in LA any more and that’s the tough part too. Every job that I take that takes me away from my son I really have to believe in. I have to believe it’s a great thing not only for me and him but for the world. I want to show my son that it’s important to go after your dreams. You know that’s what my parents showed me especially my dad. My dad he was a professional surfer. He LOOOOOved surfing. My family owns a surf shop on the gulf coast of Florida. He showed me if you love what you do you can make a whole life of it and I really want to show my son that you can really go after what you love and make your life out of it. It’s just about finding the balance in being a mom and working. You know hahaha. It’s just taking it one day at a time and trying to find the balance.
Where you a big fan of history before the show or has the show made you a fan of history?
-
I was always interested in history. My father was a history buff. I mean this man was a professional surfer and failed his senior year because he missed too many days of school to go surfing. Like he was someone who make up for his lack of schooling by reading a lot. He read a lot of history books. I was surrounded by history. We watched a lot of documentaries and history shows on the History Channel. I wouldn’t call myself a history buff but I’ve always been curious about history. History covers the gamut and it’s all about where we come from. It’s a form of storytelling too and that goes with acting. What I love about being an actor is you get to preserve history. You preserve this period of time by putting it on film. But this show. I wanted to do something I could potentially get smarter doing. This was a great opportunity because I’ve learned so much being a part of this show.
What would you like the audience to take away from watching Timeless?
- We can only make the best show that we can and the rest is out of our hands. Ya know I really wanted to do this because of my son and being a mom. I wanted to do something that I felt he could watch and I was looking for something that I felt families could watch together and learn something together. I think that’s the interesting to me about television. It brings people together and you invest in something together and I believe in that’s why television was created. To bring people together and share a mutual experience. I wanted to be a part of something that had a positive spin and you secretly learn something and spans a large age range. My son loves it and my mom loves it and she’s in her 60’s. And personally for me with Lucy I just want to be a woman on television for young women and girls to look up to that is very intelligent. Lucy’s smarts are her super power. I think that’s really cool and we need more of that on TV. Also she’s not attached. She’s not the love interest, she’s not the wife. She’s her own person. And i think it’s really cool to put a teacher, the most underappreciated role on the planet, and put her in the heroine position. Our greatest dream is that they started showing Timeless in the schools. That would be it our job is done.
I love that you play a strong, smart female heroine.. Is there anyone you look up to (real or fictional)?
- Well I think we have so many to choose from. We have so many women that haven’t been in the spotlight for so long. My mom. My mom was a teacher. She’s very intelligent and she leads with her intelligence. My mother’s a little goofy. She plays seven different instruments and she taught music. She taught music at school. And I really look up to her and I don’t see a lot of her on television. My father respected my mother tremendously and I was taught that. I was taught that that’s what you leave your personality and your brain. Everything else will fade away but having a personality and your smarts that won’t fade. I’m very grateful that she taught me to invest in that from a young age. She was willing to invest in my academia and she took me to dance class and singing lessons. She drove me to every talent thing we ever did and I am very grateful to her and each of my characters I try and find something of her in there.
