When your baby is very little, they drink nothing more than the milk from their mothers and formula possibly. Some parents may not be entirely sold on the idea of giving formula to babies but they provide wonderful benefits when breastfeeding or breast pumps aren’t an option. However, as your baby grows and develops you will want to start introducing new tastes to them, but you may be concerned about what baby can eat. If they’re not on solids yet, then they will probably be eating baby food but there are other things to include in their diet that could even help them.
So, let’s look at what foods your child can enjoy and what will be good for their general health and development of both their brains and bodies.
- Vegetables. Give your baby a wide variety of vegetables that are soft, but carrots, potato and soft cauliflower mashed up will be a great addition to their diets.
- Fish. You can give your baby well-mashed or flaked fish from six months onwards and this will be great for their brains and mental development. If you worry that your child is not developing with language as quickly as others or isn’t as responsive as they should be, you could try adapting new foods into their diet. (Also be sure to check with your family doctor).
- Poultry and red meat – this is acceptable for six months onwards which may seem quite early but as long as it is cooked well and is cut small, then your baby can enjoy red meat and poultry.
- Fruits – Bananas. Almost every baby’s first food is the banana, and there’s good reason why, because of it’s fiber and ability to easily digest it’s great for babies. Avocados are great also, they are full of vitamin C, vitamin K and folate which is good for their growth and wellbeing. Apples also, can assist but only for older babies (8 months onwards). Mangoes, rich in antioxidants and also cantaloupes, a type of melon that is very beneficial for them also.
Eating well is also going to benefit them in the current battle with Covid-19. Boosting immunity can only be a good thing and this is a good time to start. Despite babies not being overly affected, if your child has an underlying medical condition it is good to give them a helping hand with the very best food and ensure that they are doing ok. Children have strong immune systems already and their bodies are often very healthy but they can also be prone to picking things up which is just a natural part of childhood. Eat well, allow them to include new foods and make sure your baby is enjoying all the new and exciting tastes that these foods bring. Eating fresh and organic where possible is great, if you grow your own vegetables then this will be a huge benefit!
